Military pins can be worn for many different reasons. For instance, they can show a level of service reached, be worn in tribute to a fallen soldier, or identify a specific military branch. Military pins are most common around specific holidays such as Veterans Day or Memorial Day. In fact you may have noticed special custom pins within the past week. That’s because each year on December 7 the United States celebrates Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, a time to remember and honor the 2,400 people who lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
On December 7, 1941, shortly before 8 am, waves of Japanese fighter planes struck the naval base located at Pearl Harbor. The attack lasted two hours, and within that time 2,400 people were killed, 1,000 were injured, and almost 20 American naval vessels and 300 planes were destroyed. The next day, after an almost unanimous decision by Congress, the United States declared war on Japan. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the US. After reciprocating the declarations of war, America finally joined World War II.
In a speech following the attacks, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called December 7 “a date that will live in infamy”. This year we celebrate 75 years since the attack, and while we remember the infamous tragedy of that day, we can also celebrate the ultimate victory of the United States in the war. This is demonstrated best in the USS Arizona Memorial. Alfred Preis designed the memorial to have a sagging center with strong ends. This was meant to express “initial defeat and ultimate victory”.
